It doesn't matter, most people are gonna put their head in the sand and pretend its not true
They want to cling to that hope that with enough effort they could POTENTIALLY look like their favorite influencer/celebrity

It's okay, someone dumber will make a worse post soon. It's monday, and the kids are out for summer.
To answer your question: genetics. Without delving at all into metabolic pathways, different genes in different people mean people digest and repair muscle differently, as well as different genes mean different people will have different muscle sizes/densities.

Does it affect strength gains? I have the impression that some people aren’t necessarily very strong but look very muscular, while others have the same strength yet aren’t very muscular. I’m more in the second group, but maybe that’s because I’m training poorly.

Your strength is a measure of cross sectional area of your muscles and muscle density, so yes.

So is it impossible to be strong without being muscular? How, then, can we explain the individual differences between strength and muscularity?

Genetics which determine muscle density

Some people do steroids and others do not.
Some people dont work that hard but think they are.

Some people do steroids and work hard.

The end.

Interesting, so if I don't look muscular although I'm strong, does it mean I have low muscle density?

high*
more muscle per surface area means more strength
low muscle density would imply large but weak muscles

You've already said them yourself
>high
smaller muscles higher strength, harder to put on muscle size easier to gain strength
>low
large muscles lower strength, easier to put on size harder to gain strength

played sports all my life, but finally been taking building muscle and stuff seriously the past year. 10 month into gym 6 days a week, being careful to rotate groups, cardio, eating enough protein (almost every meal is chicken, eggs, rice, beans, broccoli, and then random veggies and fruit), and........ ... I am still not building much muscle or strength at all. idk what it is. I feel healthier but I still look like a DYEL. and I've been consistently doing this for almost a year.

going from very lean build and I'm still just very lean but can't gain muscle even though I'm eating a lot. I see other people who just a few months into working out turn into beasts. idk maybe everyone is just on anavar or whatever and I'm not, but yea it fucking sucks.

I know it takes a while to build strength and muscle, but an entire year with nothing to really show for it is brutal.

I've been training for 3 years and my body has changed but progress is very slow and I don't know why, one shouldn't look DYEL after so much time training

Yea, I've been super autistic about it tracking everything and working out just to the point of failure with like 1 RIR for most stuff but being careful to not injure myself, also I have a flexible work schedule so I can spend 2 hours in the gym when I go. no vices like drinking or smoking either.

but yea it's insane, I know progress is slow, just not... this slow. really thought that after 2-3 months I'd see some progress... 10 months in and hardly any has been wicked.

btw you look great, big achievement, but yea I know what you mean, if I were in your shoes I would also feel like "wtf this is what I got after 3 entire years?" again I dont mean that as an insult at all, I think we have the same type of like ectomorph hard-gaining type bodies.

I have to be honest: I made some mistakes when I started. The biggest one was trying at all costs to gain weight by going into a caloric surplus without eating enough protein. As a result, I did make progress in the gym (which is quite normal—especially when you start from scratch, you inevitably get stronger on the lifts), but my physique and strength improved only slightly. I realized my mistake only after almost two years of training (in May 2024, so a little over a year ago). When I raised my protein intake and tracked it carefully, my strength skyrocketed until the end of summer 2024.

The problem I’m facing now is twofold:

1) I’m fairly strong on many exercises, but my physique still doesn’t reflect it—I still look like I don’t even lift.

2) I don’t feel my muscles working when I train—no burn and little pump. Since metabolic stress is one of the drivers of hypertrophy, I feel like I’m missing out on a lot of gains. I’ve tried everything to get those sensations, but they just don’t come, so I don’t know what to do.

its kind of interesting really because its not just the simple mistake that makes it obvious someone is an ESL but the phrasing itself is just slightly off.

generally it would be "how do you" or "how do we", and it would be "some people" instead of some or some one. you could change do for "would" and it would still make sense as a slightly different implied context.
"how to explain that someone/some" its unintelligible but it just sounds off if you say it out loud.

It's genetics. You can even see it at the top levels of bodybuilding when some bodybuilders are just bigger, even though they are all professionals who dedicate their entire lives to getting big muscles, get trained by the best coaches, never miss workouts, eat the perfect bodybuilding diets, take massive amounts of drugs. Min maxxing everything and pushing it to the limit like their livelihoods depend on it.

But like in this photo, one guy will have way bigger quads and calves or whatever, despite they all competing at the high level of the sport.
It's genetics. They excuse of " they must be doing something wrong, they're not training or eating right" completely breaks down at the top level.

This.
And being able to take more roids than others without instantly dying is also genetics

Doesn't this hold for non competitive levels as well?
