Does lifting weights decreases the pace of aging, or increase it?

Talking natural lifting here, I know steroids age you really fast...

Met a guy who was 92 but looked 60-something. Told me his secret is that he's been physically active his whole life.

Dick Van Dyke talks a lot about the same sort of thing. He looks like a crazy old man now that he's nearly 100 but he's managed to age really well, and he says it is because of exercise.

That's just genetics. He was a heavy alcoholic most of his life. My friends grandad is the same - smokes and drinks all the time and eats like shit, but looks decades younger than everybody his age.

Once you are bedridden past 75, you are dead. The best way to not be bedridden is to maintain your mobility by staying active throughout your life. So yes, a combination of lifting weights and doing cardio will make you age better. My grandfather is 96 and still goes on multiple daily walks and does pushups every morning. He has had cancer and was a major alcoholic into his 60s, so I truly believe if he didn't bother to stay active, he would be long dead.

my grandpa had a stroke in his mid 80s. He was bedridden for months, and hired his own personal trainer to come to his house and help him. He learned to walk again and was doing 15 pound curls and inclined pushups for a while. It was pretty impressive. Most elderly decrepit people are just too lazy to work their way out of it and don't see the point

Genetics plays an undeniable role in how gracefully (or whether) you age, but it's also undeniable that good health decisions make a difference too. Maybe you're "destined" to die at 70, but it's still worth it to be active so you don't die at 50.

Depends how you do it. Lifting in a way that's stressful, or augmenting your lifting with certain kinds of diet and supplementation, could age you faster.

But if you keep it relaxed, lift for pleasure, don't injure yourself, avoid eccentric movements, etc., that's probably great for longevity.

>Does lifting weights decreases the pace of aging, or increase it?
it depends on the individual, because some people look much younger with extra fat.

Looks don’t paint the whole picture. Until you actually look at people’s organs and the condition of their insides you dont actually know how they’re aging beyond a looks perspective.

take steroids and i promise it will come back. anyway the point i was making is that it has helped keep me youthful looking despite all my vices so your concern about long term damage while i do appreciate falls on deaf ears the other things will kill me first

oh, yeah I don't have to worry about taking steroids because I'm not a bitch made faggot.

also, taking accutane to offset youth you lose from your steroids is simultaneously hilarious and the most retarded shit I've ever heard in my life

Increases it. Maybe one out of every 100,000 gymgoers is adequately nourishing themselves in compensating for resistance training. The rest are flooring the gas pedal on an empty tank. Metabolism is everything

What people call genetics is almost always just childhood nutrition, specifically of b-vitamins and sugar. If you consider your mother's barbaric culinary habits to be genetic, then yes, health is genetic for most people.
