Guess who has never done any form of oblique work before and spent an hour of doing 12x10 to failure of various oblique and side core exercises..

I can't get out of bed..

It's been a while I had doms like this. Hurt even to squeeze a turd out.
Variations of cable chops, twists, sidebends. Ended up liking a form of superman punch on the cable too, lovely stretch.

How would I know where to start for building a core exercise routine if I'm a beginner, just want to make sure my abs are defined when the dieting reveals them

russian twists, planks (then planks + side planks), pullups, leg raise progression is all you need. be careful with crunches it's easy to engage the wrong muscles especially starting out

If you're after looks, don't bother with obliques.
When doing crunches make sure you're not just leaning forward with a straight back, this focuses on hip flexors/psoas. Imagine curving your spine rather than leaning forward.

How can you 12 sets of 10 reps to failure? Either you were sandbagging hard in the beginning or you just started doing cheat reps in the end.

I wouldn't do those for aesthetic reasons, though you may want to do obliques for athletic gainz. Makes your 6 pack look worse

Russian twists are kinda garbage. Most people don't hold core to stabilize and just flail around. Goated core exercises are reverse crunches, weighted incline, and cable crunches. The seated cable crunch is great because it keeps you from using body weight. Unfortunately my current gym doesn't have one.

Yep reverse crunches are goated for real, just focus on pulling with your abs instead of using hip flexors
