If you absolutely have to choose only one then I'd say Western Boxing (better not be white if you want to get trained properly), or BJJ. If you can somehow train in actual greco-roman or freestyle wrestling that is superior for self defense over BJJ, but there's no way to train it outside of school.

Doing only one leaves you severely limited though. The best option is to go to a good MMA gym, one with some competitors and local belts. Even better if they are a top gym with UFC fighters. Do a bit of everything. Focus on boxing and fundamental grappling/wrestling skills as these are what you will be using in self defense. Also lift. Put on as much functional, athletic, strong muscle as you can. Try to train explosiveness on the pads and heavy bag.

IRL fight strategy is simple. Either pick them up and slam them, take them down, or quick and powerful boxing combinations. If you know you can't deescalate, hit first, hit fast, and hit hard. You need to always assume your opponent is dangerous. Like level 1000 natural explosive athlete hood nigger dangerous. You aren't gonna leg kick or fuck around with these guys.

If you mean by that escaping dangerous situation and avoid death, most probably sprinting if on the street. Add boxing/muay thai to that if you are cornered, then sprint.
