Is there a difference between getting lean/toned vs. increasing muscle size? Does muscle have to increase in size for there to be more (I know logically this is the case, but then what's getting toned about??)? I'm trying to build muscle while losing fat and I had a beginner routine but I'm hearing so many different things from so many different people.

You can get strength without hypertrophy. The reverse doesn't really happen.
Getting lean/toned has to do with having sufficient muscle and being at a sufficiently low body fat %.

>what's getting toned about
Increasing muscle tone, ie. the tension of the muscle at rest. Makes you look tighter, perkier, always slightly flexed/pumped. Americans usually confuse this with low body fat, because really, no American knows or understands what "muscle tone" is supposed to be. American education, really.

Anyway, the look is rather attractive because it makes you look young and slim without making you look gaunt. Think "perky, full roundness".

Well, she's American. All Americans have some xp with blacks, especially the men.

never fully understood this. is it purely because of improvements in the CNS system/some neuron thing? or can you increase your muscle *density* somehow? not density as in by dehydrating with masteron or something, but density as in just like, more muscle cells in the same area with the same water... wait. lol ok I suck at math

someone will be along shortly to "well actually" me, but the short version is below. Yes, they aren't "cells" and fill your boots on fiber distribution and all that shit.

when the muscle tears during training cells will grow into the tears. If the damage is cause by hypertrophy the cells tend mend the tear are bigger. The amount of damage area is a bell curve. There is a reason runners don't get jacked.

btw damn bro you're right https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7372125/

cool, so the correct verbiage is this sarcoplasmic hypertrophy within the myofibrils. and another factor I didnt think of is pennation angle/alignment improving

erm, prior to sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, the ratio of myofibrillar content to sarcoplasm can increase its "packing" i.e. "myofibril packing" awesome

I am glad it worked out. Take the new knowledge and tell everyone.

Thanks for the pennation idea, now I have to figure out the effects on mobility. I couldn't give a fuck about explosive capability, not a sports guy. If strength training will help me not sound like an old man during the first few reps of my RDLs I should incorporate some variation.

>sarcoplasmic hypertrophy within the myofibrils
yea, I wasn't going to explain that
