I really have to do this for the rest of my life now, don't I?

You don't have to do anything at all, anon. But if you have the means to lift heavy-ass weights and work on yourself, then why wouldn't you want to do that? You get a few hours a week away from the stress of everyday life, with music blasting on your headphones, around chill people and can focus only on moving some weight up and down. Sure, it might hurt a little, but that's what your muscles are designed to do. And if you do that you get a body that works well and looks better than 90% of normies. You don't have to become elite-level either. Just do what you enjoy and the noob gains will come fast and stay with you with minimal effort. It's that simple.

Do people do it? What's the point? I've been lifting for 15 years and never took a break for more than 2 weeks due to flu or travel

The guilt you feel for not exercising is good, means you’ll stick with it.
