I fucking hate this stupid lift and avoid it whenever possible. I do like one half assed leg day each month, it's that bad. I don't understand how some people obsess over squats like they're the best thing ever, I hate this shit. How do I turn this into a lift I actually enjoy doing, or can at least tolerate? What made squats click for you?

Just get some olympic lifting shoes. I promise you, you'll enjoy it with them on. People who tell you to squat barefoot or in flats are the biggest retards of all time.
