Whatโ€™s the point in doing bench press when machines give the exact same benefit?

false dichotomy bot - neither is any good

if you are pressing with retracted shoulders most of pectoralis muscle is wrapped around rib-cage and u wind up with droopy bitch bench tits with void in the middle cause only costal head has any chance to work
u get fucked weak shoulders as a bonus though, everything overhead becomes torture

if u're gonna bench do it like jay cutler:

Seen squats kill more people than bench; and most of /fit/ fell for the SS meme, so you can't say they aren't popular.

It's true that you can isolate your chest with what looks like a halfassed bench set to the ignorant, but there's also guys who bench strict and get a huge chest. Because all of that, focus on the chest, is still in the strict bench set, you're just not focused on it. So it's just gonna take longer but you'll get more than a developed chest out of it.

I don't think deadlift is useless - but I only do RDLs which I think are better. I do both BB bench and DB bench (incline) - I don't see how BB bench is an ego lift, unless you make it one. I've never even tried a 1 rep max on it. Any hard lift is building muscle.

No it took me maybe 2.5 years to bench 100kg. I'm inconsistent, what can I say. Might have been 3 years. Now I can bench 100kg for 5x5 I don't even bother to try and add more weight. I just do more reps occasionally. I have a decently defined chest now and I got that almost entirely with BB bench and dips. I only started doing incline like a year ago and chest fly like 2 months ago.

I just don't see how anyone can say BB bench is useless when it demonstrably grew my chest.

Weighted Push Ups are also great and have less chance of killing you, with bench press just don't go to failure when training without safeties and a spotter. Remember these were invented by short guys and prior they would just do floor presses and bent presses instead prior invention of the bench.

Nah this is what I looked like after lifting for maybe 2 years. I've just stayed the same, mostly because I don't go consistently. I'm very happy with how I look now and I've had a lot of compliments from men and women.

Back pic attached from last year.

Most of you are just deluded and/or schizo. My physique is great and I'd take looking like this any day over being a roider or fat-gut powerlifter.

Maybe I'll just train more this year so I can mog you even harder than I already do.

It is really impressive that you are able to bench 100kg, and please don't take it the wrong way, but your muscles don't look particularly impressive for the amount of effort you presumably put in.
I believe that we all started lifting because we want to look good, to have an edge in todays competitive dating scene. But some of us got distracted, some youtube influencers or strangers on the internet. We started to think that it matters how much we can bench on squat.
But in the real world, nobody cares about it. Only thing that matters is how you look. That's it. Impressing strangers on the internet isn't worth it.

> but your muscles don't look particularly impressive for the amount of effort you presumably put in.
Yeah that's key here. The first time in my life I went to the gym was about 5 years ago, when I was 28. I am now turning 33 in a few weeks. The first year of gym I pissed around, doing lifts with too light of a weight, and not trying very hard. I'd go for 4 weeks straight, then not go for 3 weeks, then go for a week, then not go for 2 weeks, then go for 2 days, then not go for 2 months, then I'd go for 5 months. Extreme inconsistency.
The second year I was much more consistent, but I did not put in a solid year's worth of training. 2024 was by far my most productive year, where I went every day from Feb to about October.
I think my progress is exactly what you'd expect honestly knowing how hard I've tried. There was a period last year where I was substantially bigger at about 87kg (I'm 80kg in the pic.)
If I had gone 100% for 5 years, then yeah it would be pretty bad. But all I wanted was to stop being a skeleton, and for girls to actually like my body. I accomplished that goal. But maybe I should just go all out for a few years to see what my body is capable of before I hit my late 30s.

you are, flat back puts all the weight on your shoulders that are not made for that
you shouldn't have some huge powershitter arch but a moderate one is necessary to actually work the chest, let alone prevent injury

Just use the safeties, they're there for a reason. If your gym's bench does not have safeties then just do the roll of shame (lower it down onto your stomach and roll it down your body) or as a last resort tip the barbell to the sides so the plates fall off (you obviously don't use clips while benching solo for this reason.) While benching there shouldn't be any risk of dropping the weight down on your neck - you should never be handling weights that are so unwieldy or unmanageable for you that there's a risk of you randomly dropping the bar in an undesirable direction, even if you fail a PR attempt you should still have enough control over the bar to bail safely.

get a spotter, or use safeties. The bar only falls out of your hands if you use a thumbless grip, or as youre benching back up you hit the j-hooks.
>bench press alternative
no really much, but dips (you need a belt belt), incline bench, floor pressing (the bar will never hit your head or neck unless you have a giant head)
Just get used to it, dont max out, go for reps and youll be fine as long as you have a spotter.

The #1 way to drop the bar on your neck is to attempt to rerack the bar BEFORE you complete the rep
This happens in every video when somebody drops the bar onto their neck
What happens is
>pressing up
>rep is reeeaaallly hard
>start to panic
>monkey brain takes over
>try to press the bar directly towards the safeties over/above your head
>bar leaves the strength groove
>you can't hold it up anymore, it's out of your control
>comes straight down onto your neck
The solution is to NOT PANIC and instead, if you can't complete a rep, to LOWER THR BAR DIRECTLY DOWNWARDS UNDER CONTROL onto your lower chest. If you have set safeties properly, you will lower the bar onto them then you can crawl out and you're fine. If you don't have safeties, you will lower the bar slowly and calmly onto your ribcage and can then roll it down your body, then sit up and place it on the floor.
New lifters should PRACTICE the roll of shame and PRACTICE how to fail a rep safely, but they don't. It's literally the easiest thing ever, you just need to be calm and mindful in the moment so you don't panic and attempt to rerack a half rep.
And of course, do not use suicide grip
