They didn't have splits. Eugen Sandow trained his entire body every session. He trained almost every day and did a lot of compound movements.

This is my ideal aesthetic. These guys never look particularly impressive. But you can tell that their strength has no shortcuts: no supplements, no injections, no gimmicks or contraptions. Just discipline and conditioning. Before the era of social media. Before workout DVDs and before the advent of Hollywood. No tattoos or false machismo. It's pure masculinity.

From what I understand, their primary barbell work was lifting heavy off the ground, and lifting heavy over head.

So, lots of deadlifts, cleans, snatches, presses, jerks. One hand and two hand.

Probably did a lot of gymnastic movements as well. Horizontal bar, parallel bar, and floor.

Also, although i said barbell, they would have used lots of different implement. Barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells etc.

They prioritised muscle control, using lightweight dumbbells for very high reps, focusing on contracting the target muscle as hard as possible, while relaxing the antagonist muscles as much as possible
The purpose of the dumbbells is not to make the weight hard to lift, it's to help you activate the target muscle

They were the peak genetics of the era and just did compounds. Why did they achieve better physiques than the rest? Bodybuilding wasn't as popular and they had a predisposition because of great genetics for it

They did the movements they liked best and often into failure or 1 or 2 reps in reserve if big movement.

most of the bronze era lifters were insanely rich and had time to rest and train.
George hackenschmidts advice for training is literally train to failure regularly and rest often, eat animals, avoid supermarket foods if you can.
These people had time to train like this because they were rich

Yeah they likely didn't take pictures of dyels or ugly people as much back in the days. Even if people were healthier in general tho.

george hackenschmidt even talks about in his book how he got groomed by a russian wrestler into being who he became
and i dont mean groomed in the sense of some discord faggot shit.
george was literally recruited because some russian doctor/wrestler saw a lot of potential in him.
He provided george with fresh meals daily, a private gym, wrestling training partners, the works. the guy quite literally wanted him to focus on his weightlifting, body building and wrestling careers

Yeah, you will. Powershitters will deny this but Serge Nubret got his body doing something very similar.

you'll get a lot more intense pump from lifting light for reps than heavy for reps

light for reps = pump so intense you'll be in pain because you're actively going out of your way to pump blood into your muscles

heavy pump = just feeling bulky

yes, this is the really big secret
you need tremendous amounts of leisure time for pleasurable, stimulating rest that makes you happy.
modern people who look good DO have that, even if they have 9-to-5 jobs, their jobs are mostly playing with toys (computer programming) and socializing (friendly project update meetings) so it's effectively leisure.
