Top_Protein_Powder_Brands_at_SUPPS247_Springvale_c0954714-6de5-4b7b-8dff-bd22818224d9
Does the brand of protein even matter beyond choosing between caseine and whey ?
The prices are absurdly spaced for a product that's fundamentally the same

It absolutely matters. One of the biggest right wing grifts is protein products, and since they're only in it for the short term money, they're just buying the dodgiest shit. I'm not a leftist, but I live amongst these people and I can tell you all of them are hocking their "specifically formulated protein bars" and shit, completely shameless. Reminder that in its infinite wisdom, the US government doesn't regulate supplements at all. Any fucking thing could be in there.

It's true that you can never really be sure, but there are certain brands that are relatively trusted. Nutricost, for instance. Ironically, they also tend to be on the cheaper side, it's the luxury foofoo shit with nice packaging for women that you've got to squint at.

This anon knows. You also can't trust the stuff with NBA stars plastered on it. Basically the more advertising, the more suspect it is, like plastic surgery on a chick.

Nutricost is good, NOW is also pretty trusted in the athlete community. Also protip, get the unflavored stuff and just put in cinnamon or mix in whatever you like. It's not that bad, basically like skim milk. All these fancy flavors they add in to hook you into addiction, there's absolutely NO guarantee those sugar substitutes aren't cancer causing compounds in and of themselves.

Not really. Just pick one that you like the flavor of and/or dissolves well. You can pay like 3 times as much for some powder that added in specific amino acids, but whey is already pretty much S tier AA profile anyway. The only other thing to look out for is safety testing for shit like heavy metals, but even brands that had 3rd party testing to be "pure" get retested by some website later down the line and find they have trace amounts like most mainstream brands.

Might just be bad luck on my end, but I have a 5lb unflavored bucket that was in the back of a kitchen cabinet that I forgot about for like 2 years, and it's only like 2 months past the best by date, but it definitely smells off, and the texture is weird. I'm sure if I put it in an air tight container it would have been fine. Next to it I also had some cereal in those OXO containers that probably 2 years old and tastes brand new.

Just get cheap bulk scoop unflavoured whey. In my area its $29.95/kg, so I use pea protein unflavoured at $14.95/kg as its half the price, and use whole milk for the leucine.
Those fancy brands with fillers and chemical flavourings are crap.

If you're really smart, you'll trace the source of their protein through their supplier and purchase the 20kg bags directly, with a sham registered business name/number.

I used to have a fren who I recall 15 years ago buying some choc flavoured whey protein from a health food store, made a shake and drank it, and randomly while driving had to stop on a freeway and had diahrrea behind a bush as his guts suddenly churned. No tp, got some liquid splatter on his pants, and his car had an aroma of poo.
My guts react the same with Quest protein bars. All this crap is terrible for us.

First and foremost you don't need this shit, just eat more meat or eggs. Secondly yes, it matters. In Poland the biggest supplement manufacturer was caught adding mercury to their whey. Several weeks later the same manufacturer was caught adding onions to their whey. You have to pay if you want quality. Either pay up or eat more eggs.

I buy what's cheap when I can find it.
I bought 1.8lbs of SixStar for $7.50 and a four-pack of Boost Max shakes for $1.70.

This is all I buy. It cost a bit extra than the cheap brands but it's worth it. It mixes the best, taste the best, and isn't harsh on the stomach.

The cheaper the powder the worse the protein farts

supps in the usa have been unregulated since 1994

the actual good shit that gets cut with bullshit prior to retail can only be sold b2b because it's all a gigantic scam

lab results unless you get ur own done are performed on then legit precursor, not the goyslop retail product

tldr fuck whey, eat egg whites, as ovalbumin is almost as good, and get your casein from greek yoghurt. or start your own company and get the legit way in a b2b xaction.

Are BCAAs really the same as protein?

No, BCAAs are not the same as protein.

---

Whatโ€™s the difference?

Protein BCAAs

Made of 20 amino acids Just 3 amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine)
Complete proteins contain all 9 essential amino acids BCAAs are part of those essential amino acids
Used by the body for tissue repair, enzymes, hormones, etc. Mostly used for muscle energy and stimulating protein synthesis

So BCAAs are components of protein, but not complete proteins themselves. Taking BCAAs alone doesnโ€™t give your body the full toolkit it needs to build or repair muscle.

---

Do BCAAs have a role in protein powder?

Yes, but not as a separate additive โ€” theyโ€™re already there.

High-quality protein powders (like whey isolate, casein, or egg white protein) naturally contain BCAAs, especially leucine, which is the primary trigger for muscle protein synthesis.

Manufacturers sometimes highlight the BCAA content to market their product โ€” but that doesn't mean BCAAs are a separate functional component.

Some cheap protein blends or plant-based powders may add extra BCAAs to boost the anabolic response if their base protein is low in leucine or incomplete.
---

When are BCAA supplements useful?

Mostly in specific, niche scenarios, like:

Fasted training: To preserve muscle when training on an empty stomach.

Very low-protein diets (e.g. cutting aggressively).

Vegans/vegetarians who rely on incomplete proteins and may lack leucine.

But for anyone eating enough complete protein (~1.6โ€“2.2g/kg of body weight daily), BCAAs are mostly redundant.

---

Bottom line:

BCAAs are not the same as protein.

Theyโ€™re naturally included in high-quality protein powders.

Supplementing BCAAs separately is usually unnecessary if you're hitting your protein goals with complete sources.
