I wouldn't swap them for anything else, but once you get the technique down (2-3 months?) and the weight starts to feel really heavy you can transition to sets of 10 instead of sets of 5. If anything feels off or you can't do the rep with clean technique then go rest and don't force it.
With 10 rep sets your fatigue will go up slower so it's easier to keep form good and avoid snap city.

Also I just might be unathletic, but when I did SS the power cleans felt more risky on my spine than DLs.

when i do deadlifts my lower back feels like it's on fire for the next few hours. if i do them too often it fucks up my back for days. my form is completely fine. guess it's just not in the cards.
