How do I avoid this happening to me? What do you think went wrong for him to still look like shit after years of lifting?

Increase weight or add more reps when you can. Use proper form, bench and ohp with your upper body, don't leg drive half the weight. Don't swing back and forth on pull lifts.

You're supposed to lift beyond slight discomfort, anon. And you're supposed to eventually increase the weight you're lifting.

I've seen dozens if not hundreds of guys just like this one who go to the gym numerous times a week and do the exact same thing, the exact same weights, and look the same two years later.
"lifting weights 4-5 days per week" means nothing at all if there is no progression in the size of the weights.

How is that even possible? Even if you lift like a retard your newbie gains should make you look better than this.

Retarded
>>lifts more than 3 times a week
Totally viable if you're including short(~30min) high volume workouts for certain body parts(in my experience hands/forearms/upper back).
>>focuses on barbell compounds
>>eats potatoes/rice/oatmeat/bread
All thats great grub, most people are just hungry piggies lacking any self control.
>>"bulks" over 15%
I'd say 20 is acceptable depending muscle mass, bf/muscle ratio is important.
>>only to end up looking like complete skinnyfat shite
I feel like if picrel dude cut he'd look decent. Not 3 years decent mind you but decent to the average gym goer.

lift hard instead of fucking around
eat mostly unprocessed food
eat at a surplus to build muscle, eat at a deficit to lose fat
