I had a similar experience when I first wanted to get into perfumes. I didn't like most Sephoraslop, they usually smell like a mess of chemicals. What changed my mind was trying bottles that originally launched in the 80s/90s, e.g. Platinum Egoiste, Fahrenheit, Green Irish Tweed.

The current acqua di gio is a reformulation and it smells exactly the same. If your knockoff hits the scent, then you're golden. Imposters often get the scent very close. The biggest thing with them is that you have to apply more and it wears off faster.

Cologne and perfume is supposed to be applied sparingly. You are not supposed to drown in it, at best it should be faint, just enough for someone to notice if they're talking with you.

I sparingly use deoderant/antiperspirant, just enough to keep things fresh, but not enough that anyone else would smell it. Women go crazy for 'boysmell'. My old fwb asked me to leave a pillow at her place, later on told me it was because the smell was reassuring and made her feel safe on some nights. Doesn't mean you have b/o, nobody fucking wants that. Especially b/o with extreme amounts of shit cologne.

Lol, those are two distinct families of fragrance. So you did differentiate. All fragrances come from one of these:

Then from there there are top and bottom notes and if it's really complex, middle notes. Smell two of the same kind like Nautica and Acqua and you'll be able to smell the difference (and you'll throw the nautica in the trash where it belongs)
