Just look at young Tom Cruise vs. old. The dude was leaner and stronger in some of the latest MI movies than Top Gun (original), but his individual abs disappeared. Same thing happened to his chest. The pec gap got wider (Terry Crews I believe also suffers from this). This is due to a number of factors that might not be something you can overcome. Connective tissue becomes less elastic, for instance, so even if the muscle mass is the same or even greater while the fat percentage is lower when you're older vs. young, it could still look considerably different.
It differs for everyone though. I've seen plenty of really old dudes on TRT that have abs that pop. I myself am 44 and my abs still look the same.
