People can't lose weight because they can't control themselves. It's about capacity of self control.
There are neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions in which the brain’s executive circuits (particularly in the prefrontal cortex) either mature more slowly or never quite reach the same level we see in most adults. As a result, people in their 30s (or beyond) can still display some of the impulsivity, distractibility, and poor planning we typically associate with childhood.
It's all because of the impaired executive function! The brain’s system for holding goals in mind, resisting distractions, and choosing long term reward over immediate pleasure. Under typical development, the prefrontal cortex and its networks strengthen throughout childhood and into the mid‑20s. But, when that process is disrupted by genetics, injury, toxic exposure or cognitive delays THE RESULT CAN BE AN ADULT WHOSE SELF-REGULATION CAPACITY MORE CLOSELY RESEMBLES THAT OF A CHILD!
Because of the delayed or impaired development of the brain’s executive‑function systems an adult’s self‑control may remain at a more child‑like level.
