It can put shearing stress on your knees a way they're not designed to bend so yeah it can probably do long term damage if you're doing it day in and day out.

This. I've crossed my legs since I can remember. I'm 32 now and my hip mobility is still peak. But you have to cross on both sides or else you're gonna have a major imbalance
