The form is not easy to describe but what I do is just focus on flexing the obliques/side and not going too high of a ROM. You might need to bend more diagonally (as opposed to a strictly side to side).

Try it. My oblique became visible after 1 month doing strictly 32kg 3x10 with 5 minutes rest in-between sets. Not sure why some people said it was a stupid workout. Never ever gotten back pain from this exercise either, in fact, my back became more stable.

I was told to do side bends as part of my recovery from a slipped disc. They are really good, as long as you're not a retard and keep your hips stable through the motion.

Just came back from the gym, I did side bends with 16 kg kettlebells and I actually felt it. I think they might work better than dumbbells for this.
