>Fork GNOME 3 because of dissatisfaction with its vision
>Create a new DE out of it called Cinnamon that satisfies the original need
>Years pass, GNOME sees many improvements and new features, such as full Wayland support and more than 4 keyboard layouts
>Meanwhile, Cinnamon is still stuck in 2011 with a bunch of shoehorning through backports from upstream

Is this DE forever doomed to be like this? The feature parity is only growing bigger as time passes.

if you don't like it, don't use it

What do you expect? If the Cinnamon had the resources to maintain a desktop long term, they would have just written one themselves instead of forking GNOME.

People like to give GNOME shit but Red Hat, Canonical, SUSE and Debian all default to it for a reason.

Cinnamon should have just been a set of extensions on top of gnome. It would have full Wayland, HDR, vrr, fractional scaling.

Oh boy! Gnome is so great that we need constant reminders of its greatness apparently.

Yeah and that reason stopped being valid over 20 years ago but in open source for some reason memes literally never die.

It's not about gnome-shell but mutter. Clem in his infinite wisdom decided to fork it and never update it so cinnamon will never have HDR and all the other Wayland shit xorg can't do.
>B-but gnome bad
Pantheon is built on mutter and they only need to care about their shell, they let gnomies maintain the compositor and get all the goodies for free

I. Don't. Care. If i cared i would go for KDE, no need to call in gnome.

Wrap it up guys, anon says he doesn't care about HDR so you shouldn't either

turns out maintaining and developing a desktop environment is fucking expensive
just ask ubuntu and unity, or poopos and cosmic.

>DE doesn't have feature
>some people use DE
>YO PEOPLE DE DOESN'T HAVE THIS FEATURE!!
O rly? Didn't occur to you that those people are using that DE because such feature isn't a deal breaker to them?

It's not just mutter. Gnome Settings Daemon is also FUBAR. For instance, it dropped libgnomekbd in 3.6 (one year after GNOME 3's release), and that's now an unmaintained, archived library. Meanwhile, not only is Cinnamon's settings daemon still dependent on said library, they even interfaced with it through their XApp wrapper years after it was already dropped upstream, and it's now a permanent part of their API. Genius!

That's not true.
https://github.com/linuxmint/muffin/commit/8599127fa99dc285426fd84c2f53ed0ae8d60d3c

5 years old at this point, so no HDR, but still.
