What computer beats the Mac Mini for the price?
I have an m1 mac mini and I'm interested in upgrading to the m4. That 8gb of ram and better CPU would be so nice. I like the apple eco system, I can even use my phone as a webcam / microphone for zoom meetings. Macs have a lot of useful tools and a unix shell.

If all I'm doing is programming (mainly native app development in swift/kotlin), is there even a better computer I can get? I can get an m4 mac mini for $509 refurbished. For how fast it is--that's one hell of a deal!

No, go for it if you like it for other reasons too.

it really can't be beat for price/perf. be sure to buy it from the official apple refurb shop. it's $470 for a refurb unit which is apple recertified and comes with a full one year warranty.

nah mini is the best value by a wide margin. maybe beelink if you needed more ram/gpu capabilities later on, but the price gap is too much for just programming

Beelink SER8 is 1TB / 32GB ram / 8845HS, exact same form factor, $500 new. On Arch Linux just watching shows and coding the watt usage is like 3-8 watts it's crazy fast. If you must get Apple shit then get the mini. Performance is about the same.

Are these upgradable over time? Like would I be able to go in and install more ram/storage/upgrade CPU and GPUs?

ssd and ram is upgradable. not sure why you mentioned cpu and gpu in the year 2025.
main difference for me was the mac mini has the power supply built in, so you just get a nice slim power cable, but on any of those chinese units you have an ugly external power adapter

After reading some reviews on it, it seems some people have wifi issues with it. Have you had any problems with it?

Yeah the wifi is not great unless the device is close to an axis point. It's not unusable though. I just plugged in Ethernet so idc.
