I've actually listened to YouTubers talk about their lives on podcasts. Many of them were already rich before starting, hence why they had the time and resources to dedicate themselves. Some travel vloggers do OnlyFans on the side with their girlfriends or wives, as I've recently discovered. And of course then there's also Patreon (and other such sites) and sponsors (which are usually just more ads).

Of course, CPM varies a lot by category. Here's an image off Google, but it might be wildly outdated, it's just the first one I could find.

I'm not sure how it's calculated exactly, my guess is that it doesn't depend on the creator's location, but rather the viewers'. So if it's done in English, you'll get some average of all of those, with the vast majority coming from English-speaking countries. Of course, doing it in some other language might mean that you get a bigger share of the non-English speakers, but it depends on how the competition looks like and the total population.

Either way, the truth is that most probably do it as a hobby. I want to create a YouTube channel as well someday, but I at least can't force myself to talk on a topic that's well paid if I don't want to do it, I'd get bored to death.
