Microsoft threatened to prevent any computer manufacturer who sold linux preinstalled from then selling computers with windows.

So yeah, the reason you can't is directly because of big tech corruption.

It's not about learning to fix your computer, it's that the overwhelming vast majority of people DON'T want to fix their computers.

It's like changing your car oil, it's quite literally the simplest thing in the world, just wrench open the oil pan, let it drain into container, close it when empty, and fill new oil from the top. The hardest thing about an oil change is changing the oil filter. Do people do it? no, they take it to a jiffy lube to pay $80 and get scammed about their air filter.

>cost effective
Cost-effectiveness is a meme at a certain scale, because marketers and salesmen try every trick in the book to get the most out of your pocket while expending the least amount out of their own.
You can "escape" that by making informed decisions, where you pay your time as tax to escape getting a shitty product, because cost-effectiveness is also real at the same time, and the collective knowledge of the consumer and their demand form the actual value of the thing.

the people that use Linux are not the kind of people that will buy a desktop computer from a big box store.
Our only hope is that some china laptop maker will make their own chromebook clones.

Like some import restrictions forbids them from installing Chromeos or win on the machines (or they just want to save money). And they just install a stripped down debian with a fullscreen firefox on it.

Linux computers are in fact sold in big stores, sometimes they're quite popular.
Chromebooks were flying off the shelves 5 years ago when all the kids started "learning" remotely.

It's literally, non-figuratively, realistically the exact opposite of this. You have to create a bootable USB in both cases but Linux install is just clicking Next a couple of times and you have everything. No need to even know what a "driver" is since all the drivers come automatically. No license key, no Onedrive setup, no Live account setup, when you see the desktop it's ready to use.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
