Right? It's insane to me. So many people think all you need is a pair of HD560s which cost 150 or 200 bucks and slap on a Harman EQ preset (made by the likes of Oratory et al) and along with a $100 chinese SMSL DAC/Amp that Amir from ASR said it's completely transparent and high SINAD, they've achieved hifi endgame.
Everything else is either worse or snake oil. For them, detail doesn't exist, stage doesn't exist, transient speed doesn't exist, transducer types don't matter...

>That doesn't make all the expensive gear you own irrelevant snake oil
Dacs literally do one single thing and it's very simple it takes a digital signal and converts it to analog, an expensive dac changes literally nothing and you are wasting your money if you spend thousands on that shit, same goes for cables, its a fucking copper wire. So yes, it is snake oil and a waste of money.

Spending money on the headphones themselves isn't snake oil, but arguably you're going to hit diminishing returns faster than you would on say speakers. But that doesn't mean a 2000 dollar headphone is snake oil.

after a certain point (which is not very far at all), anything more becomes a matter of personal preference rather than technical advantage
like i have no doubt a $20,000 sound system sounds /different/ to a $2,000 sound system, but not because it's objectively, measurably /better/, just that it's different. if anything with all the meme tech like vinyl records and vacuum tubes, it might even be technically /worse/ than a cheaper system

it's like how vinyl records or reel-to-reel tape is worse than cd's in objective sound quality, but because they sound /different/ to cd's, some people may prefer how they sound, even though there's nothing preventing a cd from sounding like a vinyl record or tape if it were to be processed accordingly

I agree, cost is not always related to performance. For example, the HD650 cost too much for how shit they sound. Can get better headphones for the price, and much better headphones for more money.

>Dacs literally do one single thing
R2R and Chip DACs sound different
>same goes for cables, its a fucking copper wire
Copper cables and silver plated copper can sound different

These differences are often only revealed with higher chain matched gear. I got planars I thought sounded good on $300 DAC & AMP. I spent a couple thousand and they came alive.

I don't care what poor plebbitors think. Why the fuck would you get butthurt if someone spends $200, $2000 or $20000 on a gizmo? Why would you pretend to be an expert on it if you choose cheap? Why would you care what boomers spend their hoarded money on. Retarded normies spend more money on cars, bikes, guns, food, alcohol, vacations and subscriptions. 'Snake oil' is sold everywhere.

There are many measures, but you gotta train your ear a little bit.
Better headphones often have better imaging, better stage, better separation, better extension on both ends, higher resolution / detail etc.
The HD650, as well as the HD600, is pretty bad at almost all of those. But some people enjoy that kind of sound, for some reason. Many just haven't actually tried to pursue something better.
