Gee I wonder how? Maybe because VA is a technology invented for wine moms to watch their daily soap operas on a large screen while lying down on a sofa, not a computer monitor.

For a regular gaming monitor, I see no reason not to jump on this 4K@160Hz IPS for $240:
https://www.amazon.com/3840x2160-Computer-Response-G274K-Ultra-Thin/dp/B0DYN2S1KN

If you want MiniLED-IPS (brighter and more contrast but with slight blooming) the TITAN ARMY P275MV PLUS for $390 w/$10 Off promo code TITAN10 would be the best option:
https://titan-army.com/products/titan-army-p275mv-plus-gaming-monitor?variant=43373768605807&country=US&currency=USD

If you want maximum HDR w/MiniLED-VA (best non-OLED contrast at the cost of narrow viewing angles and dark smearing) I'd wait for the TCL 27R94 to be released.

Could anyone recommend a matching pair of monitors with one to be used vertically?

I'll only do the occasional gaming on the horizontal monitor so it doesn't need to be 4k.

Most of the time I'll be working with one horizontal and one vertical but would really like a matching pair.

^This looks right up your alley (even has full portrait mode rotation so you don't have to VESA mount them unless you want to)
I know you said one doesn't have to be 4K but might as well at this price since you don't save much going with a lower pixel density when the price is this low.

No, it's the correct size for a 4k monitor. Do you think 16" is the correct size for 1080p?

The only good monitor is apple's new XDR display and it isn't even released yet. I won't use your OLED that burns in, or your washed out panels with grey "blacks". I will use their QD-LED studio display.

no, I have a 13 inch laptop and its 2560 x 1600 and awesome, noticeable improvement over 1080p. But I think there are diminishing returns at higher resolutions and sizes. Do you sit really far from your monitor or something?

It isn't. What kind of scaling are you using on that, 150%? That's sub 1080p.

The diminishing returns kick in when you have a higher resolution on a smaller display.

Makes sense as that was around the time OLED monitors started to enter the market which destroyed the margins OEMs were making by sandbagging their LCD panel spec for higher prices. Since then they've had to compete where they can on resolution/density, and price.

it's only a matter of time before bulky, inefficient desktop monitors are replaced by glasses form factor displays with 6DOF that let you pin windows anywhere you want in 3d space
the technology has been growing by leaps and bounds, won't be much longer before it's equivalent to or better than the best legacy displays you can get
especially considering that all monitors on the market are either dogshit or overpriced, usually both

We are decades away from the 16k per eye (32k total) resolutions you'd need for glasses to be a viable screen replacement option.

completely unnecessary if you're trying to approximate a 4k 32" screen at ~3 feet, which current offerings are already 80% of the way to doing

>completely unnecessary if you're trying to approximate a 4k 32" screen at ~3 feet,
That's 90 PPD, with a horizontal view angle of 42 degrees.

Assuming a crappy VR headset with a mere 120 HFOV, you would need 12k per eye due to overlap.

I spend months to save for this 65 inch OLED but it was worth it I use it since 2022 and will use it until it breaks. The new ones don't even offer any benefits. The best way to obtain one relatively affordable is waiting for the new model switch and buy the old generation.

When I got it it was a shock because the colors were so vivid than what I was used to (A 55 inch Samsung LCD from 2016).

IPS is still acceptable for something like a laptop, where you mostly work with text rather than consume media. I wish mine had OLED but it was not affordable at the time when I bought it the next one would definitely have it since more budget models now get OLED too. In smartphones it became so common that even cheaper ones have it.

IPS is not the high end anymore. And the glow can be annoying. In the monitor I use right now (Acer XB321HK) I get white bars of light that are only visible on dark background. This is "high end IPS" from 2017.

It took years but my first gen QD OLED has some barely visible burn in on solid blue or gray background. It still looks better than a brand new LCD with backlight bleeding. It's a few months out of warranty now.
Funnily enough the icons on taskbar I had on 24/7 without autohide did not burn in and it's more visible on sides, it's more like a wave than any particular pattern. Either way, it's still impossible to see in normal usage. I had to make an image in Paint with sufficiently dark shades of gray or blue to see it.
When they make a 4K ultrawide one I'll upgrade. All the 4K ones I see are 16:9 and the ultrawides are still 1440p.

QD LED is still either IPS or VA. Apple is using IPS for their XDR display, they just have a lot of backlight zones because it's a miniLED panel. If you display an image where the individual backlight zones are bigger than the lighter pixels on the image e.g. a star field, it'll still look grey like any other IPS display.
