>NAS Case Guide. Feel free to add to it:
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/wiki/Home_server/Case_guide

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualisation. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavour of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

I got pic related set up

I need a windows 10 inside a vm to be able to see the ip camera 192.168.43.160 on the local network

how do I do that? atm it's not seeing it, there is ip camera software that only seems to run on windows and when I search for cameras on local network it's not finding it

Is ECC a meme for a desktop PC sometimes used as a home media server? All I want to do is store/backup media downloaded from the internet and maybe occasionally stream it locally it other devices like my laptop or phone when I'm at home. I don't need this to be available 24/7. Perfectly fine only powering on the storage drives or PC when I want to store more data or stream it.

Can you set your VM to bridged networking, so it's on your network directly and gets a 192.168.43.x address? Those search tools often work on layer 2, so they'll find a device no matter what IP it has, but they won't work across NAT.

Oh, yeah, it won't work with a Wi-Fi adapter. If you can't connect your desktop with Ethernet, you might be able to get a second cheap USB Wi-Fi adapter and pass it through to your VM with USB redirection.

That's an idea.
I am actually close to giving up on this, I installed the software on wine and it launched fine but still couldn't detect the camera (nmap and arp found it).
I have an ssd with an old windows 8 install, I will booting that (I could not boot to it using usb enclosure). If that doesn't work then this shitty camera will go straight into recycling bin.

Most likely it'll be just fine. I've actually had a SAS backplane with bare drives sitting on a piece of cardboard before, with no issues.

>>106925816 more or less described the potential issues, even if he did overstate the concern. So: don't put metal on metal, don't put the drive in some stupid place where your cat or toddler will knock it down, have backups if you care about the data (you should do this regardless), and at least glance at your temperatures (both computer and disk) once in a while.

I finally figured out the reason why my OpenVPN isn't working on FriendlyWRT...
I was following this guide and while I can connect to the vpn, no traffic routes through it
https://www.diyenjoying.com/2022/10/02/simple-configuration-openwrt-as-a-vpn-server/
Well, sure enough, right there at the very beginning of the text...
>Of course you can run your VPN server on your home server, but please be aware that you can be faced with network issues if docker is installed on it.
>Docker adopts a server firewall to handle it own networks. So, a tricky firewall configuration can be needed to bypass your vpn traffic around docker’s firewall rules.
So FriendlyWRT has docker installed, and that is why I can't get these instructions to work for my OpenVPN.
Now, I just need to figure out HOW to get around the docker firewall stuff or maybe set up the vpn inside a docker container?

It's just a $20 aliexpress camera. I only needed it for one task (one time use) and didn't want to buy a proper (and expensive) cctv camera, it has no name or anything. Years ago I had a hidden pen camera and it worked fine, recording to sd card or streaming over usb but this piece of garbage can't even do that (usb connection is only for charging)

so it turns out the main reason nothing works is because the docker setup on this thing uses obsolete iptables while everything else uses nftables and this causes conflicts.
