Trackballs
How do you guys feel about trackballs? Are they easier on the hands than mice?
I got a recurring RSI on my right hand and switched all mice usage to my left, but find it hard to use modifier + click (like, ctrl/shft/etc.)

can you take the ball out? how is the movement detected, with a mouse sensor?

It's better to just get one of those massage guns and run it over your hands and forearms every hour

Trackballs are ok but don't really solve RSI

Horrible, just awful
The fact I have to PINCH to click makes it actively worse than a normal mouse

Does a thumbstick count as a trackball? Prolly not but I got this
Still getting used to it though

I have one built into my keyboard on the side. They don't compare to nipples.

These sorts of keyboards exist so you can type lines of code or use Autocad commands without taking your hands off the keyboard, it has nothing to do with preventing RSI

seems like something that will give you a stroke. why subject yourself to it?

I don't know about that one but generally, yes
>how is the movement detected, with a mouse sensor?
Depends on the model. Some have one or two laser sensors, others have rollers like ball mice. I assume they use opto-isolators like ball mice but I wouldn't know, I've only ever had the laser kind

>>106945390
I do too. They don't, but neither compares to a real trackball.

What?
also, rsi/ergonomics hell
It's essentially a macroboard shaped like a hand holding yours...Don't have to move your fingers much is the benefit

I have an Elecom Deft and while I'm happy with it, I don't think it's actually better for your hands, it's just a different kind of strain than a mouse.

The real solutions are
- alternate between input methods (I use a mouse at work and a trackball at home)
- reduce mouse usage altogether in favor of hotkeys (I have an i3 + vimium + doom emacs setup)

your thumb should not be involved in making a left click.

Do you not understand how a vertical mouse works?

he's right tho. on a normal mouse you push index against the desk. on that weird shit you pinch thus also use your thumb.

ah, weird. I read it as "it's not recommended to use the thumb for left clicks", ergonomically speaking

Everyone at work used one so one day I let in. A decade and some change later I haven't used anything other than a trackball. Logitech M570 is the daily driver.

trackpoints mog trackballs, fast and accurate and has all the functionality of a mouse without taking up anymore space and your hands never need to move from your home row

curious if with hall effect keyboard you can use WASD instead. should be doable since it's basically a joystick

I use a trackball. Where a regular mouse stresses my wrist, I find the trackball stresses my hand instead. Still mostly prefer the track ball.

for basic shit like browsing it isn't a big deal, and the only game I play I use a controller so it's only if I'm working for 8 or more hours in a row that it starts to bother me.

Fake news
Your hand resting on the mouse itself already exerts a force that allows you to click with your thumb not touching the mouse
Do you need pics?

build one myself. using a 53mm poolball as the 'driver' with a 1000hz sensor. alignment of bearings perfect, unlike retail trackballs.

my main issue still is to find a comfortable thumb 'click' position. i like offloading the clicks to the keyboard for now.

mouse is still superior, since my indexfinger refuses to use one extensively, i had to switch.

>PINCH to click
this is only noticable when you first get a vertical mouse and then your muscles adjust. I dont notice it at all anymore, but I do get less strain due to lower rotation of the lower arm

I still like my humble mx518, I don't hold my hand parallel to the desk, more like 45° and I never had problems.
