The only real thing I love about modern phones is that I actually have a decent camera with me at all times.

I don't even pick up the phone if I don't recognize the number and I'm not expecting a call. If it's important, they'll leave a voicemail that I'll check at my convenience and respond depending on if one is required at my convenience.

I want a fridge with an API so that I can set and get the temperature with my favorite programming language, or get a notification when something is almost empty. I mean I like tech, and this is a technology board, why wouldn't I want something like that? Of course, all I will actually get is a fridge with closed source software, a terrible user interface, and a permanent connection to the manufacturer.

Sure, it was just an example. I don't know if you program, or at least write scripts to make programs on your computer do things. I do, and I'd love if I could treat every device in my house like a program and write a shell script to combine their functionality, or do something only if some other thing did something. I don't even have a persuasive example, but before I knew how to program I also didn't know why I would want to do so. I'm all for smart devices, but this needs standardization, and everything I see is just pure dogshit. Damn, let me adjust the brightness of my lamp in Python, and not in some buggy proprietary Android app.

honestly i picked up a cheap point n shoot style DSLR and even though its sensor is "worse" as per the datasheets than a phone, just having a real lens at all and the sheer size of the sensor makes the photos taken with it so much better. I can't go back to using a smartphone camera now, even the really good ones are still junk compared to a real proper standalone camera.

I paid 250 for mine in the 2020s and got ripped the fuck off. They were about that much MSRP when they were new in 2013.
Looking them up just now for this very post, they seem to go from between 150 to 300 bux off of ebay and such. Mine only came with the stock 2-5x lens, though iirc some SKUs came with a pancake instead of the 2-5x.

It's a half-decent camera though. Only glaring fault is it doesn't have a viewfinder, but most cheap cameras have digital rangefinders anyway so they're pointless. Also it doesn't have any known drivers to use it as a webcam except in the jankiest possible way (you can pipe its screen to a TV and use that with a capture card, that's about it even though Nikon supports direct use with a PC with other camera lines) but that is a VERY niche use case.
