Age Discrimination in Technology Hiring
I fucking HATE the gatekeepers of the technology job openings in the American workforce right now. Been programming for TWO FUCKING DECADES, and now suddently nobody wants to hire me for any programming roles anymore. WHAT IN THE EVER LOVING FUCK???? Can someone please just round up all the HR folks, the senior level folks, and anyone else involved with the hiring decisions for these jobs and just teleport these idiots out to the middle of nowhere somewhere out in the universe far away? Perhaps it would re-open a world of work opportunities back for the rest of us who put our lives into learning this craft. We're quite capable of cheating and generating code using AI, training our own models, and even picking up syntax we've never encountered before and figuring it out in a matter of seconds and getting work requests done with a 5 minute learning curve at best. We are fucking well practiced and awesome at this shit. The only problem is these CUNTS who won't even give us a chance at an interview, let alone even sit down and do the job anymore!!! I swear to God, anyone out there looking for programming help and claiming they just "can't find the right people" is absolutely fucking FULL OF SHIT.

You know managers are paid more than programmers, right? Not to mention you'd be working like 6h a week in the worst scenario. You could use the spare time to contribute to valuable open source projects. In fact that's what most people with decades of experience do.

So just stop saying you have 20 years of experience, damn it. What's the difficulty? What's the length of experience that gets you hired the most? 10 years? Then just list your experiences from the last 10 years, what's the difficulty, for crying out loud?
I have 14 years of experience in the field and my CV only shows what I've worked on in the last 10 years. It's completely unnecessary to put on your resume that you witnessed the Y2K, it doesn't interest anyone. In fact, they might even see it as a negative point. They'll think you have a very outdated mentality, that you're difficult to deal with, etc. Nobody wants to deal with grumpy old people in the workplace.
Your problem is a non-problem. Just stop selling yourself like a 2 decades programmer.

Been there tried that, still can't get interviewed nor hired. All they need is my name and a quick background check to figure out my age.

My mentallity is not outdated. As for being difficult to deal with and/or grumpy, that is not the case when I'm doing my thing and earning what I'm worth. Frankly, I focus on what I'm doing and avoid human contact for the most part, so nobody gets bothered because I'm not "dealing with anyone" really; just the work in front of me.

This! With 20 years of experience and earning well, you should already be retired. For those with a lot of experience and who enjoy programming, there is always the possibility of doing something useful in the open-source world or creating software for themselves. I would also rule out a programmer with 20 years of experience. Like nigga you had two decades to enjoy yourself. Time to look for an adult position like leadership, management, or maybe retire, start participating in open-source projects, or whatever.
Just the way this animal >>107104798 talks already shows that he is not fit for the modern job market. Note that I am not getting into whether he is right or wrong, but that the type of professional he is showing here is precisely the type of professional that most companies will avoid, and the type of person who usually causes more headaches than delivers results.

You're so dumb you just didn't understand my point. The modern job market demands that you suck up to your manager, that you offer encouraging words to the juniors on your team, that you participate in 3000 meetings a day, that you turn on your webcam, that you say GOOD MORNING SAAR, that you smile, that you actively participate in conversations about the weather, etc. If you're not capable of emulating that personality, the programming market is no longer for you. That was precisely my point, you old, decrepit cunt. Are you so old that you can't even interpret a simple text anymore?
Honestly, I don't even know why I still waste my precious time with useless and ungrateful faggots like you. I hope you continue to be ignored by companies, start starving, and are forced to work at Wendy's in exchange for a plate of food and a glass of water.

At no point did I say that the current job market is good. I also prefer to stay in my own place, doing my tasks and delivering everything on time, but the boomer boss is more concerned with whether you turned on your webcam and said GOOD MORNING SAAR to the junior member of your team than with your productivity. Like nigga have you forgotten that 99% of companies in our field are literally fake? They deliver little to no real value, they only exist thanks to things like financial speculation. Your boss is more interested in you being a friendly person in the office than a hyper-autistic individual who delivers everything perfectly and flawlessly. What will guarantee the company's money are the VCs who will pour millions of dollars in after seeing (You) socializing with your colleagues. Wake the fuck up nigger!

Don't project yourself onto me. The one complaining about not being able to find a job anymore because they're a useless +30 idiot here is you, not me. I'm very well employed and I've never even come close to having difficulty finding a job. Quite the opposite, almost every week I have 3 or 4 recruiters messaging me on my LinkedIn.
Your problem is that you don't know how to listen to people. I'm casting pearls before swine because I still have consideration for this place. It was here that I gained my interest in programming and I want, as much as possible, to contribute so that other anons can also find their place in the market. The world doesn't revolve around you, you have the mentality of a teenager, you think the whole world needs to adapt to your work style just because. First, overcome this protagonist syndrome of yours, maybe with time you'll be able to see why you're sidelined in the job market.

Nobody will give two shits how productive you are, how smart you are, nor how much you get done nor how likable you are. You're just going to have a big target for constructive discharge/dismissal on your back and they're going to do everything they can to stonewall you off from getting a damn thing done on the job until they either get you to quit in frustration or find an excuse to fire you. And that's when you'll realize why the older ones who end up lasting longer at the company longer also all coincidentally seem to have side hobbies shooting their collection of scoped sniper riffles and assault riffles on the weekend and they want everyone at work to know about it; its a deterrent to scare people off from even starting this pwrry bullshit with you. My advice: go ahead and start inveesting in making yourself look scary as fuck now so they think you might snap in a fit of rage when they start trying shit with you when you get older.

Boy am I sick and tired of listening to other people tell me what I'm "supposed to be by age X". What the fuck ever happened to America being a place where we're SUPPOSED to be free to live how we want to live and be who we want to be in our lifetimes? I seem to remember being taught in school that America was a place where we had freedom of choice. Instead it seems more like we either conform and submit and do as others expect us to do as per the stereotypical expectation or else go live under a fucking bridge as a homeless person! Certainly doesn't seem like freedom to me. I liked being a code monkey, was very happy and content being a code monkey, and wanted to STAY a code monkey. I quit my last job after the company came under new ownership. The team lead who hired me was soon replaced with someone who was over a decade younger. The new lead proceeded to just keep sending me instant messages asking questions about every bit-fidly thing under the sun such to the point that I couldn't focus on getting any actual work done, and then the dude turned around and started questioning why I couldn't seem to be getting any work done. Constructive discharge/dismissal tactics I'd seen before; this is the kind of shit they start doing to give you the hint that you're being handed your hat. Then the new owners wanted me to sign a bunch of new employment agreements that were far overreaching as compared to the ones I originally had signed with the company. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I refused to sign them, and I left after gracefully doing knowledge transfer for about a month so as not to burn a bridge and lose what good work referrences I still had from being an employee there. Couldn't find work after that.

I never said I hadn't tried looking for other jobs outside of programming. I certainly did try. After months of not getting anywhere in the tech sector, I applied for jobs working at Walmart, a sacker and/or cashier and/or night stocker at various grocery stores, a coffee barista at Starbucks, cook and dishwashing posittions at fast food places, waiter and other related work at nice restaurants, day labor at washateria, landscaping crew member, etc. The list goes on and on. Not a single one would even contact me in for an interview. If I tried showing up in person instead of online, every place I went said I had to apply online. Felt like I was just sending applications straight into the trash can; nobody was interested. The only way I can now earn is if I deliver people and food and kill-off my car as I put more mileage on it. See, those are now the only hiring parties that are interested in hiring me; the ones that are in some way screwing me over because they know they're not only barely paying me anything at all, but they're also getting more out of me than just labor alone; they're practically getting a free car out of the deal without having to incur the expense of keeping it running until it dies. The jobs I don't apply to are ones that expose the worker to hazardous chemicals that will almost certainly have long term health impacts, or else work where there's high chance of sustaining a lifelong crippling injury or getting killed on the job (which are very low wage too) . As a rideshare driver, I've even had passengers with felony criminal records working safer jobs who got hired successfully and are earning more money than I do. This is fucking nuts. I'm qualified, able bodied, strongh & healthy both physically and mentally, and cognitively sound and able to do all sorts of work, but nobody gives a shit. All they see is age.

If you found your own company you do 14h a day paperwork, taxes, acquiring customers, manage your employees and projects, sit in meetings... and never write a single line of code again.
A few years later, if you survive that long, you are a business management expert while having completely lost the track of programming because the world moved on.
In the worst case you go bankrupt, lost track with programming and have nothing.

Yes I know all about the lifecycle you're describing. I had an uncle who, after decades of programming, got into management, eventually never actually worked with source code again as his duties changed and newer languages came into the picture, etc. He didn't found his own company, but did remain an employee of larger organizations. He commuted an hour-into and an hour-out of the city each day, did a lot of sitting on the job, didn't take great care of his own physical fitness nor eat healthy, but kept earning good money and raised a family and invested wisely, etc. Eventually he got cancer and passed away in his mid-to-late 60's, only a few years after retiring, but his family survives and is doing well all these years later.

I don't want to age like that. I'd prefer to keep working from home as a code monkey with no having to lose 2 hours a day to commuting. I'd prefer to use that time to exercise daily, make my own home-made super-healthy meals, and pretty much be an "anti-ager". Part of that lifestyle choice includes exercising my cognitive abilities regularly; I want to keep solving complex problems, use reasoning skills, etc, just as though the job itself was similar to using sites such as "Luminocity", "BrainHQ", "NeuroTracker", etc. Yes, I'm aware that AI can solve complex problems faster than people can. But from what I've seen so far, most people I've encountered don't seem to know and understand HOW to use AI to get that sort work done faster in the first place. I certainly get it, for I've been dabbling with AI for a few years now, but can't get hired to demonstrate that I know what I'm doing with it in the first place no thanks to age-ism.

I will be straight, zoomers are cancer, some of the most entitled retards ever to work if you can call what they do work. They act like egotistical pricks who thinks the world revolves them rather than an individual working in a cooperative with other individuals who also have their own needs, wants and desires. They both need constant handholding and tardwrangling while also being complete drama queens about pay, time off and working hours -- again without giving a shit about their colleagues.

Been there seen that. Heard the rumors but didn't believe it until I found myself surrounded by it. Totally true. Lesson learned. Don't wanna have to work with zoomers again in the near future. They need more time to grow up; clearly they spent way too much time playing video games during their upbringing.

Most people aren't willing to take a chance with you because they're loosers, just brush it off and look for a different job. One that you don't want to do, might be the route to go, every every now and again you come across a job that's banging.\nAnd so don't let it go
