old linux vs new
still using 10 year old Slackware Linux, 14.2.

how big trouble I am in and how soon?
when will internet stop working?

right now I am locked to a Brave Browser from March 2023, nothing more recent will work

all other browsers that still run in slackware 14.2. would be even older

Vivaldi: 2022
Firefox: 2019, I think
Palemoon: 2023 but only the January 2023 release works without crashing, not more recent than that

somekind of glibc in Slackware 14.2. is too old for more modern software

version from Slackware 15 cannot be backported to 14.2.

no other linux distributions can help with the situation, slackware seems to be internally different from current other linuxes

Just backup your files and clean install an updated version. Why do people make things needlessly more difficult?

it works fast with outdated hardware

you and i are similar. we got comfortable in our homes. we didn't want to leave. the world tries to burn it all down around us. i gave up fighting mostly. i update my distro every couple years and just kind of put up with everything getting shittier, more broken, more slow, more horrible. its all that happens.

You could have debian with xfce or mate running like a maglev on a toaster before the thread 404's. You don't have to punish yourself.

That piece of shit WM you're using would work on a much modern distro too. There's no need to be a baby duck.

My brother in Christ, it says

i went from 14.2 to 15 which i then had for about 5 years, then when that got old i upgraded to current.
now i have gentoo running in a chroot with the slackware configured kernel and userland running the init system.
why settle for one thing?
get the best of both worlds.

my userland is super lightweight because portage allows me compile stuff the way i want with 100% portage convenience.

still, im such a habitual person that i still keep all the slackware packages installed.
i can guess why you like slackware, it ships with everything and just works but its definitely not the smallest of distros because it tries to cater to everyone (which it does an excellent job at)

slackware is basically the windows equivalent of home premium ultimate server edition all-in-1

Pretty sure the latest linux kernel would be faster than a 10 year old kernel
