Why do americans call them video games, when they're technically computer games? Because of their visual aspect? Most games are audio-visual.

computer game and video game don't mean the same thing. a computer game is a game played on a computer, but may not involve a video display, like for example Simon is a computer game, but it is not a video game.
not all video games are computer games either, for example Pong is a video game, but it is made up from discrete analog components, with no computer.
