mini darkroom in your eyeballs only aids in required brightness. But this headset and all VR headsets don't get much hotter than 100 nits because the lenses absorb so much light, especially pancake. Not really. The use case is "video games" and it's already good enough for pretty much every kind of game imaginable (PCVR I mean, not standalone). The problem VR has and has always had is that nobody really makes these video games, it's stuck in a catch-22 of not having enough games for mass adoption and not having enough users to attract big-budget game development from 3rd parties.

All the other "use cases" that you're thinking of are basically misuse of hardware that is primarily designed to be used for video games and you think the usability is ass because the hardware is not designed nor intended for whatever you're imagining.

I refuse to call SteamOS or KDE Linux Arch Linux derivatives. Arch Linux is first and foremost about rolling release update system. Just because those systems use pacman as package manager (which you can't even use efficiently since systems are image based and read only) doesn't mean they're Arch Linux derivatives, otherwise MSYS2 users can say they're using Arch. CachyOS, Endeavor and Manjaro are ArchLinux derivatives but SteamOS isn't.

Ubuntu and Mint are indeed using Debian packages, that's why they're Debian derivatives. SteamOS doesn't use Arch packages, it using image produced from installing those packages. Nobody is saying that server that's running 10 different docker container is actually running 10 different fedoras, alpines, debians.

>SteamOS doesn't use Arch packages, it using image produced from installing those packages.
you described using arch packages. the difference is its not a 'regular' desktop distro its a distro purpose made for valve's own devices. which means they prioritize shit like gpu drivers and test every update on every official steamos device (steamdeck, lenovo legion, now steamframe/machine)

running it is not much different from running something like atomic fedora (which i use on my laptop). you get most GUI shit from flatpaks, most cli stuff from homebrew and anything else you need from podman/toolbox containers

That's like the main selling point. Having a cable behind you while playing VR isn't great. The problem up until now was that wireless VR was a compromised experience in terms of quality, so the hopes with this new headset are that the foveated rendering & compression along with the dedicated streaming 6GHz radio they bundle in the box will actually provide a similar quality experience to a cable but while still giving you full freedom of movement.

wireless was just fine 5 years ago on the quest 2. bumping the bitrate, improving encoding, reducing latency is great but even if none of that shit improved for 5 years we'd be just fine with 100-200MBPS video

I think it was "just fine" for questlets who only got to experience extremely low quality native headset games or compression nuked PCVR, but not actual PCVR on a good headset with a real, lossless video connection. Hopefully the optimizations they're putting in this thing will bring the experience closer to the latter, that's the whole point.

Don't forget that it has to process the internal cameras to track your eyes, send that over WiFi to the GPU which is waiting to know what zones to fully render, then send the image back over WiFi
All that is going to introduce frame lag, which can cause motion sickness

I'm pretty sure the foveat thing, which will be prolly just send 2 float numbers, will happen during the streaming, inside the adapter, and not in your PC. It's to decrease streaming latency, not to improve GPU frametime.

By pretty sure I mean I've just come up with that in my retarded mind.
Anonymous No.107193784 [Report]

They very clearly state that this is a streaming-first device. The "local" game running capability is just a side bonus, or at least anyone looking to buy one of these things should look at it as a side bonus or risk extreme disappointment. It's just there so you can play some 2D indie sidescroller on a projected VR screen and shit like that, shouldn't expect anything more.

No it works. It's been in a steam VR beta for a while. It reduces latency because you can send a better looking image with less bandwidth and less to decode.

I did read the virtual desktop guy said foveated rendering, not encoding/streaming, has a latency problem with wireless PCVR though. He said it's because the encoding comes after rendering so it's more recent and can work more recent eyetracking data unlike the rendering.
