AI just had to roll around just as I was planning to pursue it as a profession. The industry is changing, graphic design is becoming a discipline rather than a profession, industries are internalizing the skillset and in-housing their designers. As a result nobody can be "just" a graphic designer, there's little demand for external designers, they are too problematic because they lack adjacent skills.

I make print works, I'm a printer. Half of what I do is graphic design and as such I never hire an external graphic designer, but nor could I print much without having these skills myself. I design physical products, graphic design is part of my skillset as a product designer, nobody who wants chairs made will hire a graphic designer to support the fabrication of chairs, even though it is needed. They hire a product designer and just expect us to do the graphic design as part of that.

My advice, hard skills. You need hard skills to market yourself. Graphic design isn't a hard skill, bad luck, you've got to tie it to a hard skill. coding, painting, print making, carving, CNC, lazer engraving, commercial painting and decorating etc

This guy gets it. Niche up and lean into what you’re into with hard skills and you can go in house at a company that does something you like or change industries with your GD foundation. I’m AD in a medical tech company now, being able to pronounce drug names from taking bio, read CAD drawings and work with 3D assets to make training videos got me the junior job. Those are still the basic skills that make or break a decision when we need to hire someone new, 3D is similar to web in terms of exploding your job options and relatively few graphic designers commit the time to become good at either. Whatever you can do to accumulate skills toward the work you prefer will pay off.
