>democracy
You mean the 22 bureaucrats members of the flag commission that were appointed by politicians represent "democracy"?

Also, it is funny how the best flag redesign happened in 1925 and not a single redesign since came close to it.

My flag didn't make the top 10, but that's OK because it was radically different than the average state flag. Of course most of the top 10 are just like every other state flag because people want what's familiar but ever so slightly different. Anyway, the one in the middle is closest to my design so that's the one I like.

That's what democracy means in practice.

Still on the New Mexico flag history, the flag was commissioned to a non-profit organization of directly descendants of somebody who were in the American Revolutionary War, so they were a bunch of patriots with direct links to the state foundation, so people who really cared for the state. They then organized how it would be commissioned, and the one selected was created by an archaeologist who studied New Mexico heritage.

So yeah, there are ways where "representative democracy" can work IF the people in charge care a little bit about the state.

This Illinois one was a bunch of boomers elected in a fake two-party system that selected their friends who understand nor care a shit about their state so they can get a fat paycheck for participating in the commission.

It's not democracy, it's Democrats. Dem staffers and public servants are A) technocrats who will always defer to whoever most loudly and visibly claim to be experts (the claimed experts of flags are "vexillologists"), and B) conflict/risk-adverse and afraid of responsibility (if they didn't have rich parents they'd be accountants) so everything they create has the air of design by committee.

The Mississippi flag could be better but it's not nearly as reddit as its blue state counterparts

Vexiology faggotry wants every flag to look like North Korea's or Osea, be a landscape with a sunrise or some random svg. A lot of these look like corporate flags

Nepal
Brazil
Butan
Isle of Man
Kazakstan
and many others

All of them are awesome flags that represent really well their countries, are easy to remember and are very distinct. You don't need to place a lot of ornament for a flag to be good. Flags have a purpose besides "being good to look at".

I'm not talking about real flags that are geometric an simple, but the proposals many are making. A lot follow that meme flag manifesto like it is the only truth, they make flags that on paper are fine, but are actual shit.

Look at picrel, all but one are kiddie-tier vector landscapes. Uninspired, it was probably made by an actual kid, but that same spirit is present in a lot of designs made my modern vexiology enthusiasts, which are on a smug crusade to change everything to their shit standards.

Other flag proposals are designed to be more like logos than a flag, I get wanting to make a flexible design, but slapping an svg in the center of a rectangle, completely separated from the context of the flag makes it look like a corporate flag. Overly simplified objects are also something you see in modern proposals, it is related to curves and lines where the angle and shape of the curve are so specific that it defeats the idea of "So simple even a child could draw them".

I also personally dislike using clever negative space or other modern tricks, probably just an old man yelling at a cloud situation, but also they are often not as clever as they think they are and come out as lame.

Now I do agree with you.
Also I love how people misinterpret the New Mexico flag that became really popular with redditors because of a youtuber and people don't understand why it is good, refusing to understand the whole context and concept of the flag reducing it to just "because color is good and shape is simple".

It don't need to be THAT complex as the Republic of Venice flag or else it risks not serving the purpose and uses that a flag has nowadays, but i think I would pick it over the Corporateยฎ look and feel of new flags.
