ok, someone explain to me how the fuck pantone Coated Vs Uncoated is SUPPOSED to work.

anyone whos messed about with pantones knows that youre supposed to use C swatches for coated paper, and U for Uncoated paper

but colors NEVER translate across,
1235C looks nothing like 1235U

so what the hell do i do if a clients brand guide only has C swatches?

what do i do if I need to print on the opposite type of surface from whatever swatch i have??

Stick to one and the client wont notice the difference.
If you mixed them you're FUCKED

If you do only use one type and client says something just say "Hey uuhh different type of paper different light reflection yadiyada"

Client is pissed.

Then purchase a color guide for each Coated and Uncoated and then use different colors to match them.
The Pantone code just mean we mix X colors with X colors. Doesnt mean it's the same color at all.

Yes they don't look alike because U will neve be as bright as C

No client (or even project manager) will ever understand that, and they DO get mad about it.

It works just fine if you follow basic common sense protocols like having the printer provide a final proof of the actual ink color on the actual stock, that the client can then approve and sign off on.

Of course that can create added expense, but that's the cost of high precision/ nitpicking. If the client balks at the time/expense/hassle and says it's not that important then put *that* in writing and have them sign off on that, or politely decline the job if you think they are lying.

If the printer balks at creating/providing accurate proofs then they're the wrong printer for that job/client.

All of this is literally why the Pantone system exists as a color matching standard, it doesn't work without people who understand how to use it.
