Ben-Menashe hired California tech whiz Michael Riconosciuto to embed a backdoor in PROMIS. This allowed Mossad to spy on anyone using the software. To sell this bugged software worldwide, Eitan needed a front with clout. Enter Robert Maxwell, the British media tycoon and Mossad asset. Maxwell’s newspapers gave him access to world leaders, making him the perfect salesman. Through Degem Computers, an Israeli company he acquired, Maxwell flogged PROMIS to intelligence agencies in Australia, Canada, South Africa, Poland, South Korea, Guatemala, and even the Soviet Union’s KGB, raking in over $500 million by 1989.
