it's a combination of things. i want the model to recreate the in game model's proportions to a degree, stuff like like leg shape, hip/waist width, breast size, etc. that precludes using a lot of fan art. the outfits and characters that i'm training loras for are also frequently or almost exclusively drawn off model in fan art and i'd like to avoid that. na'el's hair is almost exclusively drawn off model, as an example, because people drawing fan art of the character are referencing other off model fan art instead of the game assets. some of these outfits or characters also have next to no art of them, so they have to be 3d models.
but it's mostly just because it's fun to figure out how to avoid style burn in. there's not really anything preventing me from getting a model 90% of the way there and adding some slop to the dataset for regularization purposes and rebaking. i've done that before and it does work, it feels like cheating though.
