Whether or not people like Sakura or Lucy they *are* actual characters They have screen time, personality, conflict, relationships and are anchors to the story, not aesthetic furniture. Even if they're divisive (like Sakura always falling behind the other MCs or Lucy being weaker than the other characters), people remember them. You can't draw horny fan art of a ghost which is why KnY porn sucks. They're all either badly drawn or completely off model to the point they don't even look like the actual characters from the show.
Anyways, you have to exist in the story for people to want to sexualize you. You can't fade into the background for 80% of the plot and expect people to start giving a shit and drawing R34 of you. That's not how the degeneracy game works.

She's barely active in the story at all and is mostly for “being calm” and “having a poison gimmick” yet is hailed as this “fan-favorite” super slayer by fans who confuse aesthetic with relevancy. Even that new movie didn't boost her popularity and give her more porn, or even relevancy. She shows up at least for the first 20 minutes them dips out and Akaza takes over the whole show. She's treated as a minor character even in her grand finale (and first and only fight btw).
Reze got one movie just for her and it actually boosted her popularity because she's actually the main character. I expect the same will happen to Makima who's already popular.
