Wayne Nance, the Missoula Mauler, murdered at least six people in Montana during the 1970s-80s and ultimately never saw the inside of a jail cell. Nance was born in the little unincorporated community of Clinton, Montana on October 18, 1955, the son of George and Charlene Mackie Nance. George was employed as a long haul trucker and Charlene a waitress. The family lived in a trailer park outside Milltown and Wayne, while a bright child, was also remembered as an oddball and juvenile delinquent. He supposedly identified as a Satanist in his teens and used a hot coathanger to brand Satanic symbols on himself and said he would like to murder someone before he was 19. Nance graduated high school in 1974. His 19th birthday was that fall and he apparently accomplished his goal of committing a murder before he reached it.
On April 11, Donna Pounds, 39, arrived at her West Riverside home after coming back from her job at a Christian bookstore and apparently ran into Nancy in the master bedroom, armed with her husband's .22 Luger rifle, which he used to fire a warning shot at the bedroom wall. He was wearing latex gloves, apparently to avoid leaving fingerprints behind, one of them left at the scene, and carried a black gym bag he had a clothesline in, which was used to tie Pounds to the bed. Nance raped her and then made her go down to the basement, where he fired five shots into her head, stuck the gun barrel in her vagina, and left. Pounds's husband Harvey found her body later that evening and witnesses reported seeing Nance around the house that afternoon; he was a friend of her teenage son who knew the house well and knew where his father kept a gun.
