Today, 30% of men worldwide are circumcised (penis mutilation). This is incomprehensibly high compared to basically all of human history. Prior to the 20th century, it wasn’t even really universal in the Middle East. It is technically a requirement of most sects of Islam, but Islam is notorious for a great level of theological variance across regions.

It was practically unheard of outside the Levant for all of human history.
