How come Italians, like the Irish, weren't considered White by Americans until the 1950's when Rome was the birthplace of Western Civilization and Hitler viewed Italians as Honorary Whites?

Was it due to their olive, tanned skin or their Catholicism?

"White" in the context of colonial America was largely a description of class and character. Irish and Italians were seen as low class and dirty.

Whites often associate Catholicism with non-whites. Coupled with their tanned skin, it's easy to see why Italians didn't, and sometimes still don't, get the white treatment.
