>Sorry, Henry 8. We just can’t allow you to divorce your brother’s widow. Better luck next time.
>Oh, hey, Philip 2. What’s that? You want to marry your double first cousin? Go right ahead, sir.
What the fuck was the Catholic church thinking?

They were in both cases motivated by a dreadful fear of the Habsburg kings in the wake of the sack of Rome so they were thinking "do whatever the spaniard says"

The Pope was being held hostage by Henry's wife's nephew.

Why is divorce illegal anyway it's legal in the old testament and in islam.
Also I just found out cousin marriage is legal almost everywhere.

The Catholic Church could grant dispensations for close blood relations fairly routinely.

as the other guy stated, it was mostly because of Spanish political connections that caused the church to say no to allowing Henry to divorce

I'm not an expert but last I recall its something about the oath being from god ro some shit like that

>"No, it's not a 'divorce' - we just retroactively declared that your marriage of 10 years was actually never a valid marriage in the first place"

>Hey pope can I get an permission to marry my brother's widow?
>Sure thing Henry, you are defender of the faith
>Hey pope, funny thing, my wife can't give me heir but she is my brother's widow so that marriage was invalid right? Can I have annulment?
>Look Henry, love you, but we gave you explicit permission for that, we can't annul that on that grounds
>Fuck you Pope!

>ok listen up everyone... from now on this one dude is going to stand-in for God Himself, mmm'kay?
It's a shame Luther wasn't the type of man who could have rallied an army and wiped the cathtard stain from history entirely.

>Hey pope, funny thing, my wife can't give me an heir
I'll never understand why this wasn't good enough for the Church. The turmoil that would ensue from the lack of a male heir should have been reason enough for them to just shrug and hand over the goddamn annulment.

Because that's not how canon law works. If she was infertile that's one thing but she gave him kids already. Just crown daughter as king, Poles and Hungarians did.

I mean, is he wrong? Chuds seethe eternally over Jews being successful, what more proof do you need they are in fact the Lord's Chosen People? Einstein was no different than Kepler in trying to understand this beautiful machine the Lord made when he invented nukes if we're being honest

>Poles and Hungarians did.
Those are two good reasons why it shouldn’t be done.

Henry already had a son. Henry FitzRoy, who he made a Duke. He could have easily legitimized him. Wouldn't exactly be without precedence, because...literally Henry VIII himself claimed legitimacy from the Beaufort's, who were themselves legitimized bastards.

If you look at what was happening in Sweden and Germany, a man could get very rich by converting to Protestantism and taking all the gold and land from the monasteries

Annulling the marriage was just a really convenient excuse

The Beauforts were legitimized by an act of parliament, but it also doesn’t matter as much when Henry VIII was also legitimately descended through the Yorkist line. A legitimized bastard also is simply not good enough to rest peacefully. He will be challenged, even if people pretend to be okay with it in your lifetime. Henry’s entire purpose was to avoid another war of the roses, ie his dynasty being challenged. You might as well just settle with having a woman rule at that point.
