It makes sense when the average life expectancy is 30 and the average women would not make it to menopause. What's odd is that puberty used to happen significantly later pre 1850, girls wouldn't hit puberty until 15 to 17.
Traditions like the quinceanera are found in multiple cultures and helf at around the same age in lots of cultures to celebrate a girl reaching puberty but now girls hit puberty at 10 to 12.
So it's strange that the age of consent was as low as 8 not just in the US but even where I live in the UK you can find village marriages for children.

No this is not true, it happened all over the world to all classes of people including those with sufficient nutrition, people who did not see an increase in height in the 20th century.
