The institutions societies people choose to have and great people within them are perhaps just as important. And also random chance.

In the modern day US, north of Meso-America, there was a massive, continent wide decision to live in smaller communities rather than big 'civilized' cities. So the natives of that whole half of a continent didn't have the institutions or infrastructural capabilities to make some of the scientific advances to match the Europeans. Particularly with tool making.
Natives in the modern US did have, in the past, big cities and civilizations more akin to Meso-America, like Cahokia, but they deliberately abandoned them since they were a worse way to live than the more communal, smaller-scale style of living that they became known for in the US.

And the disease stuff is very accurate. Without many draft animals, they didn't contract new diseases, so were more than decimated by Old World plagues once they came into close contact with Europeans.

The neolithic revolution happened at an arbitrary time and arbitrarily favored eurasia first. It could've happened in America or Africa 10,000 years earlier, it just didn't. It could've happened 10,000 years later than it did, these epochs are meaningless on a planetary scale. If you were a big chief in native america who got a vision of the future, nothing would prevent you from creating an empire.
