Several British missionaries and religious organizations wanted to, but the British colonial authorities stopped them, out of respect and concern for the indigenous culture and religion (once they'd made efforts to bar some of Hinduisms more barbaric practices). India was also one of two places that European explorers found pre-existing Christian churches when they arrived, the Goan Thomists had been trying, and failing, to convert the country for over a millennium by that point. Today attempts to convert Indians has had the best effects in the untouchable section of society - the people that Hinduism basically sees and treats as subhuman.
