How come Italians weren’t considered white by Americans until the 1950's, even though Rome was the birth place of modern Western Civilization and Hitler believed Italians were honorary Aryan whites?

I have great grandparents who came from Bari to NJ in the 1910s. Ive talked to my grandmother alot about her childhood and parents, shes never mentioned being considered not white, in fact that family side had pretty light hair lol

The map is a shit representation of his text , but overall Franklin was pretty accurate. Even Scandinavians are darker in complexion than people from the British Isles, who are the palest in the world. The only thing he gets wrong is the artificial division of Saxons from other Germans, probably because he wrongly assumed British paleness came from the Anglo Saxons and not prehistoric invaders.
