There were many kinds of eugenicists. There was doctor Joseph DeJarnette for example who fully supported forced sterilization of not only mentally ill but also of even relatively petty criminals and alcoholics. He also admired Nazi Germany's eugenic efforts and praised them while demanding that Americans should sterilize more people. Meanwhile by all contemporary accounts of his personal life he was rather kind and altruist towards the mentally ill and downdrotten in his mental institution in all other ways, he just did not want any of them to ever breed.
