That was the greeks that would just rub olive oil on their bodies to clean themselves. The romans did bathe. They even built entire houses just for baths!

Roman soldiers always carried lube with them. Lube boys were part of the baggage train and would rub them down after a long days march.

>they just clogged their pores and trapped dirt on themselves 24/7
This is one of those things that I'm convinced has to be a mistranslation or something.

Yeah, how does that actually work? Because I would think that smearing olive oil all over yourself and scraping it off, would still leave the person covered in sticky oil?

They had soap, olive oil soap was popular

If they had some powder they could have gotten rid of any residue with that. Rubbing dirt or mud on your body actually does get rid of loose skin and whatever other particle are on your body.
Fresh clean water would be a huge problem for a standing army at that time. And bathing regularly actually removes natural oils from your skin. Most people don't realize this if they never spent enough time outside to realize that bathing makes you sunburn easier. Makes it easier for bugs to bite you. Dries out your skin after the moisture evaporates and now you have no skin oil keeping your skin damp.
It seems they might have found a way to prevent all this while also not smelling like rutting pigs and having all kinds of marching sores.

They could have bathed then oil'd up or done so in ceremony. Being oiled up all the time is just uncomfy

What you're describing is basically an abrasive, but there's no accounts or evidence to support that at all. They just scraped oil directly off their skin and then said, "good enough".

Makes sense, if you get captured and raped by the enemy at least they're not going in dry so to speak
