Texas Revolution
Were the rebels in the right?
It is not like it was just a Texan idea to revolted. It was just one part Mexico that rebelled in the Mexican Federalist War. Elsewhere the rebellions were just crushed (like in states that tried to establish Republic of Rio Grande), local leaders were threatened and negotiated to submission (like in Tabasco), or Mexico's government gave local leaders concessions that made them stand down (like in California). Texas was the only place where armed secession succeeded.

the only reason that Texas won independence while the other rebelling regions were crushed was influence from the southern states which wanted to expand slavery westward. Texas received volunteers and aid from the south, with propaganda about freeing whites from brown despotism. Though the actual rebels were originally quite mixed and fought against centralization by Santa Anna and the conservative party. A number of the white settlers and volunteers also fought with the ideological goal of expanding slavery (which Mexico had banned a decade before).
In short, Most of Mexico was in rebellion, Texas just had support from wealthy southerners who wanted to use its rebellion as a way to expand slavery, thus giving it the resources to avoid being crushed like the rest.

The great plains make me uncomfortable. It's like their giant owner is going to come back anytime.

Agreed. Nobody else was able to win. Everyone else got beat or gave up or made deals. Mexico is very lucky northern Mexico is a part of mexico. If anerica was smart they'd fund rebellions there to make Mexico smaller. Make Mexico into 3 or 4 countries instead of 1 big one.

Eh.
One of hand one of their main issues was being able to enslave people, on the other hand they were resisting the centralization of power of a dictator.
I'd say it was a morally neutral action

It succeeded in Yucatan for quite a while, although that state's independence didn't survive to the present
