The peninsula hijacked the name Spain. In the XVIth, XVIIth, XVIIIth & early XIXth century, Spain meant both the old Spain (Peninsula) & the New Spain (Mexico), New Spain was an extension of the Old Spain (that why all the laws came from Madrid, rather than being created here locally (as was customary of the Ancien Regime)

The implosion of the empire led to the creation of the modern nation-states, all of which named themselves based on foundational myths or anachronistic denominations.

Thats why you have hispanistas claiming "spaniards" (peninsulars) invented tacos or tequila, when it was actually invented by the ancestors of modern day mexicans (settlers who came here with knowledge of destilation & native knowledge of the local plants)
