your army's elite units were beaten and humiliated at every front they fought, in greece by hellenese, in the eastern front by litteral slave labour, and in your prized colonial possesions by the anglo-saxons. what was left to defend the sicily and homeland were second line, third quality units of ragtag peasants.
your air force that couldn't muster at the same time no more than few hundreds of servicable aircraft total, counting all types and including the obsolete ones.
your navy was pounded so hard that by the time of armistice you had mere three dozens servicable surface combatants of all types total. two thirds of submarine force was at the bottom of the pond together with two thirds of the surface fleet.

germans literally had to bail you out at every occasion because you were borderline retarded even when at your best. and they did so because knew well that every dead and mutilated italian between them and us was is a second to catch a breath before it's their turn to die.
