Is there a point in making art right now?
I apologize in advanced if this seems to be off topic but I promise I'm being genuine in asking this and want a meaningful discussion. It kind of pertains to discussions about art I've had with friends.
In lieu of our civilizational decline and the increasing hardship and strife that increases every day with the average person along with the enshitification of all platforms and entertainment is perusing art a worthwhile endeavor? For instance, my friend states that there are more important things to do, and that you need to be making more money in your free time or working on physical practical things rather than art. He also states that our culture as it stands simply cannot produce art due to the conditions not existing to make great artists. The kind of art that existed in the past cannot be replicated because the spirit that those people had does not exist today and we can only imitate. That culturally we are at a dead end and nothing good can be produced and if it does it will be very rare and niche and gatekept. He believes all art is political. He has discouraged me from wanting to pursue artistic endeavors. I have disagreed with him, believing art and beautify to be important things intrinsically.
There's also the idea that with things just continuously going down the shitter, maybe there are more important things to be doing, and your time should be spent prepping yourself. Being a starving artist is just setting yourself up for getting fucked over. It's just not viable. And with AI on top of all of this it just seems like a waste of time. I guess all of this applies more to trying to actually make a career out of being an artist than just doing it as a hobby.
